MUSIC CARE CONFERENCE FOR SHSM STUDENTS: Exploring Where Arts and Health Meet
For students interested in the arts, healthcare and community impact, music offers career possibilities that extend far beyond the stage.
What is SHSM?
The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is an Ontario Ministry of Education program that lets high school students focus their learning on a career sector that matches their interests, such as Arts and Culture, Health and Wellness, or Non-Profit, while still earning their regular diploma. Along the way, students gain sector certifications, hands-on experiential learning, and “reach ahead” experiences that give them a taste of college, university, apprenticeship or work. Students who complete an SHSM graduate with a special seal on their Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
The SHSM MUSIC CARE CONFERENCE, offered in partnership with Metalworks, is a perfect fit for students in the Arts and Culture, Health and Wellness, and Non-Profit sectors. Designed by educators who understand the SHSM program, the day puts experiential learning at the centre of career exploration, helping students connect their interests with future education and employment pathways in arts and health.
In one day, students from all three sectors will explore emerging research and participate in workshops facilitated by experts in their fields. A panel discussion will introduce industry programs and pathways, while a keynote presentation will challenge students to look beyond traditional performance careers and consider the role of the arts in healthcare.
Bringing these sectors together creates opportunities for students to discover connections they may not have considered: how artistic skills can contribute to care, how healthcare can incorporate creativity, and how non-profit organizations can bring these approaches into communities.
“Over the past few years of offering these programs we have seen students light up as they discover new possibilities for music in care. Those moments are why we create these experiences: to help students see where their interests could take them.” – Dawn Ellis, Director of Programs
For educators, it is a purposefully designed SHSM experience that connects learning with real-world possibilities. For students, it is a chance to broaden their understanding of where the arts can take them and imagine a future where their interests can make a meaningful difference.
“I loved hearing about the intersections between careers and pathways in arts and healthcare.” – TCDSB Consultant
