  • 1. Does becoming MUSIC CARE certified make me a music therapist?

    No. MUSIC CARE certification is an additional certification for anyone who wishes to be able to integrate music into their regular practice more responsibly and effectively. Music therapy is its own scope of practice with specific qualifications and is regulated by national professional boards.

  • 2. Who is the certifying body for MUSIC CARE certified?

    The Room 217 Foundation is the certifying body for the MUSIC CARE certified accreditation. Room 217 is a Canadian health arts organization with over a decade of community-based research experience   and a world leader in music care.

  • 3. Who recognizes MUSIC CARE certification?

    MUSIC CARE certification is a new standard being developed and will gain recognition as more and more individuals, organizations, products and services become certified. 

  • 4. What are the advantages to becoming MUSIC CARE Certified?

    MUSIC CARE CERTIFY is a quality improvement program. By becoming MUSIC CARE certified, you are demonstrating a commitment to improving the quality of your care delivery. You and your organization will differentiate from your competitor by committing to a tangible means of person-centred, relational care with an outcomes-focused approach. Other advantages include capacity-building, community connection, deeper relationships, and for organizations, cost benefits.

  • 5. What is the MUSIC CARE CERTIFY registry?

    Once an individual and/or organization is MUSIC CARE certified, they are placed in the MUSIC CARE CERTIFY registry where their work is profiled. The registry is located on the MUSIC CARE by Room 217 website, musiccare.org/certify

  • 6. How long does it take to get MUSIC CARE certified?

    Here is the average time it takes to become musiccare certified:

    MUSIC CARE CERTIFY FOR INDIVIDUALS can take 6-12 months.

    MUSIC CARE CERTIFY FOR ORGANIZATIONS takes 8-12 months.



  • 7. When can I apply for MUSIC CARE CERTIFY?

    You can sign up for MUSIC CARE CERTIFY anytime at musiccare.org. However, application is part of a certification process. For each type of certification, the process works on a cohort basis. For each type of musiccare certification, there are four cohorts per year.

  • 8. How long does MUSIC CARE certification last and can I re-certify?

    MUSIC CARE CERTIFY FOR INDIVIDUALS lasts for a period of one year. You are then eligible to re-certify.

    MUSIC CARE CERTIFY FOR ORGANIZATIONS lasts for a period of two years. You are then eligible to re-certify.


  • 9. Where do I go to get MUSIC CARE certified?

    MUSIC CARE certification can be obtained online. Training and facilitation is virtual. Validation documentation is submitted via the musiccare web app where you can track your progress at a glance. For organizations, there are optional in-person components for an additional fee.

  • 10. Is MUSIC CARE CERTIFY only for people who are musical or only for long-term care homes?

    No. MUSIC CARE CERTIFY is open to anyone who wishes to make music a more integral part of their care practice. You do not have to be a musician to become musiccare certified. An appreciation for music is a great advantage. 

    Any organization that wants to provide more relational, person-centred care through music is welcome to become musiccare certified i.e., retirement home, assisted living, hospice, hospital, prison, faith-based centre, school, spa etc.


  • 11. Our organization is from outside of Canada. Are we eligible for MUSIC CARE CERTIFY?

    MUSIC CARE CERTIFY FOR INDIVIDUALS is unrestricted in terms of geographic location. MUSIC CARE CERTIFY FOR ORGANIZATIONS is currently available in Canada, United States, and the UK.

  • 12. Does MUSIC CARE certification count for continuing education units (CEUs)? Note: This applies to MUSIC CARE CERTIFY FOR INDIVIDUALS only.

    For MUSIC CARE CERTIFY FOR INDIVIDUALS, a certificate of completion is presented to all successful candidates for each level of training. This is best practice for all Room 217 continuing education courses. Credit for CEUs for individuals who are MUSIC CARE certified is contingent upon approval by the certifying board that oversees your professional scope of practice. MUSIC CARE by Room 217 is willing to discuss CEU approval of individual with professional practice associations.
